Greek Embassy in Vienna

Embassy of Greece in Vienna, Austria

Overview

Greece's diplomatic presence in Vienna occupies an elegant building on Argentinierstraße in the 4th district, just minutes from the Belvedere Palace and the bustling Karlsplatz area. Head of Mission Georgios Iliopoulos oversees bilateral relations between two nations bound by shared Mediterranean temperament, EU membership, and deep cultural affinity — Austria's classical composers drew heavily on ancient Greek themes, while today's ties center on robust tourism flows, Eurozone cooperation, and coordinated positions within the EU on migration and energy policy. Greece and Austria maintain particularly close economic links through shipping logistics, renewable energy investment, and a thriving Austrian tourism market that sends hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to Greek islands and coastal resorts. Vienna's Greek community, established through decades of migration, sustains Orthodox parishes, cultural associations, and business networks across the capital. The embassy also coordinates Greece's engagement with Vienna-based international organizations including the UN, OSCE, and OPEC Fund.

Visa Services

As both Greece and Austria are Schengen Area and EU members, no visa is required for EU/EEA citizens traveling between the two countries. For third-country nationals requiring Schengen visas with Greece as the main destination, applications are processed through the consular section. The embassy also handles national visa (Type D) applications for extended stays in Greece including work, study, and family reunification purposes.

Consular Services

The Consular Section operates from a separate address at Mayerhofgasse 1/20 in the 4th district, providing passport issuance and renewal, birth and marriage registration, notarial services, document legalization, and emergency assistance for Greek citizens across eastern and central Austria. The section handles civil registry matters, voting registration for Greek nationals abroad, military service documentation, and authentication of documents for use in Greece. Consular staff include Iliana Andritsou (Second Counsellor) who heads the section. All consular visits require no appointment but are limited to morning hours Monday through Friday except Wednesdays.

Service Area

The embassy and consular section in Vienna serve Vienna, Burgenland, Lower Austria, Carinthia, and Styria. Western Austria (Salzburg, Upper Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) is served by the Honorary Consulate General in Salzburg.

Special Notes

The embassy houses an Economic and Commercial Section (phone: +43 1 506 15 18, email: ecocom-vienna@mfa.gr) that facilitates bilateral trade and investment between Greece and Austria. The Greek National Tourism Organisation also maintains a presence in Vienna to promote Greek destinations to the Austrian market.
