Cards Are Widely Accepted — South Africa Is Modern
South Africa has excellent card infrastructure. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets (Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Checkers), petrol stations (attendant-operated — tip ZAR 5-10), shopping malls and most tourist-facing businesses. Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) work at modern NFC terminals in urban areas. SnapScan and Zapper (South African QR code payment apps) are used by many local businesses — they require a South African bank account or can work with some international cards. Amex has limited acceptance outside upmarket establishments.
ATMs Are Everywhere — But Use Them Safely
ATMs from FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Absa and Capitec are found throughout cities and towns. Most accept Visa and Mastercard. Critical safety rule: use ATMs inside bank branches, shopping malls or well-lit petrol station forecourts — never standalone street ATMs, especially at night. Be aware of your surroundings, shield your PIN, and don't accept help from strangers. Card skimming exists. Withdraw during daylight and store cash securely. Always decline dynamic currency conversion and withdraw in ZAR.
The Rand Fluctuates — Exchange Rates Matter

Petrol station attendants: ZAR 5-10. Car guards (informal parking attendants): ZAR 5-10. Hotel porters: ZAR 10-20 per bag. Safari rangers: ZAR 100-200 per person per day.
