South Africa occupies the southernmost tip of the African continent and delivers an extraordinary range of experiences. Cape Town — routinely voted one of the world's most beautiful cities — sits beneath Table Mountain with the Cape of Good Hope, Robben Island and the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek within easy reach. Kruger National Park is one of Africa's great safari reserves: 19,485 km² of Big Five wildlife in a landscape ranging from bushveld to mopane forest. The Garden Route traces 300 km of coastline between Mossel Bay and Storms River through forests, lagoons and dramatic cliff scenery. Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse — Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill tell the story of the nation's transformation since 1994. Durban brings Indian Ocean beaches, Zulu culture and one of the world's largest Indian diaspora communities. The Drakensberg mountains offer hiking among 3,000 m peaks. And the food and wine scene — braai culture, bobotie, biltong, world-class Pinotage and Chenin Blanc — is a destination in itself. Most Western nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Passport must be valid 30 days beyond departure with 2 consecutive blank pages. Yellow fever certificate required from endemic countries. Special documentation applies for minors under 18.

South Africa Visa & Entry System

South Africa operates a visa-free system for most Western nationalities: US, UK, German, EU, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and Japanese citizens can enter without a visa for tourism or business up to 90 days. An immigration officer stamps your passport on arrival with an authorised stay period (typically matching your return ticket, maximum 90 days) — always verify the stamped date as overstaying triggers severe consequences. Passport must be valid at least 30 days beyond planned departure with 2 consecutive blank pages (not endorsement pages). Yellow fever certificate mandatory if arriving from endemic countries (including transits over 12 hours in Nairobi or Addis Ababa) — vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. Minors under 18 face special documentation: unabridged birth certificate, parental consent letters if travelling with one parent, and receiving-person details if unaccompanied. Dual South African citizens aged 18+ must enter and exit on their SA passport. Currency declaration required for ZAR 25,000+ or foreign currency exceeding USD 10,000. Overstaying is treated extremely seriously: the German Foreign Office warns it triggers automatic "undesirable person" status with a 1-5 year re-entry ban. Work, study and residence require advance visa applications through SA diplomatic missions.

Travel Guide

South Africa is a country of staggering contrasts. Cape Town — Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, Camps Bay's turquoise strip, Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years — is routinely ranked among the world's most beautiful cities. The Winelands of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl produce world-class Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon in some of the most photogenic wine estates on earth, many with Cape Dutch architecture dating to the 17th century. Kruger National Park (19,485 km²) is one of Africa's premier safari reserves: Big Five guaranteed in a well-managed park with excellent infrastructure ranging from bush camps to luxury lodges. The Garden Route — 300 km of dramatic coastline between Mossel Bay and Storms River — passes through indigenous forests, lagoons, whale-watching points (Hermanus, June-November) and the bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge (the world's highest from a bridge). Johannesburg's transformation since 1994 is visible in every corner: the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Soweto's Vilakazi Street (the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners), and a thriving contemporary art and food scene. Durban delivers Indian Ocean warmth, surfing, Zulu culture and one of the most vibrant street food scenes outside Asia — bunny chow, curry and samoosas reflecting its Indian heritage. The Drakensberg mountains (UNESCO) offer serious hiking among 3,000 m peaks. And shark cage diving at Gansbaai and Mossel Bay brings visitors face-to-face with great whites.

Practical Money Tips

Cards Are Widely Accepted — South Africa Is Modern

South Africa has excellent card infrastructure. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets (Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Checkers), petrol stations (attendant-operated — tip ZAR 5-10), shopping malls and most tourist-facing businesses. Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) work at modern NFC terminals in urban areas. SnapScan and Zapper (South African QR code payment apps) are used by many local businesses — they require a South African bank account or can work with some international cards. Amex has limited acceptance outside upmarket establishments.

ATMs Are Everywhere — But Use Them Safely

ATMs from FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Absa and Capitec are found throughout cities and towns. Most accept Visa and Mastercard. Critical safety rule: use ATMs inside bank branches, shopping malls or well-lit petrol station forecourts — never standalone street ATMs, especially at night. Be aware of your surroundings, shield your PIN, and don't accept help from strangers. Card skimming exists. Withdraw during daylight and store cash securely. Always decline dynamic currency conversion and withdraw in ZAR.

The Rand Fluctuates — Exchange Rates Matter

The South African Rand (ZAR) has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years. Check xe.com or your bank for the current rate before travel. Exchange money at banks (FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank) or licensed forex dealers (Travelex, American Express) — rates at airport bureaux are acceptable but city-centre banks are slightly better. Avoid unofficial changers. For visitors from the UK, EU, US and Australia, South Africa generally offers excellent value when the Rand is weak — a fine-dining meal for the equivalent of EUR 15-25, a bottle of top estate wine for EUR 5-10.

Tipping Is Expected and Important

Tipping is customary and forms a significant part of income for service workers. Restaurants: 10-15% for good service (check if service charge is included — it usually isn't). Petrol station attendants: ZAR 5-10. Car guards (informal parking attendants): ZAR 5-10. Hotel porters: ZAR 10-20 per bag. Safari rangers: ZAR 100-200 per person per day. Safari trackers: ZAR 50-100 per person per day. Housekeeping: ZAR 20-50 per day. Uber/Bolt: tip in cash if desired. Tips in cash and in Rand.

Note: Always check current exchange rates before traveling. Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and authorized money changers.
