Overview
The British embassy at 80 Strand Road sits on the Yangon waterfront in one of the most architecturally distinctive parts of the city — the colonial-era Strand precinct between Pansodan and Sule Pagoda Road. It is the only UK diplomatic post in Myanmar. Visa-applicant traffic uses the standard UKVI online application route on gov.uk, with biometric enrolment handled at a VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre — the centre is assigned at booking and for Myanmar this is often a regional centre rather than an in-country one. Student-route applications form the largest single flow (UK universities have long-running scholarship and self-funded pipelines including Chevening Myanmar), alongside Skilled Worker, family and visit categories. Documents issued in Burmese script require certified English translation as part of the supporting paperwork. UK visa decisions are made by UKVI hubs outside the country.
The embassy is a working mission rather than a public visa-decision counter; its day-to-day work is the diplomatic representation of the UK to Myanmar plus consular assistance for British nationals in the country. British nationals planning travel to Myanmar — independent visitors interested in Bagan's archaeological zone, Inle Lake, the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Mandalay, the Ngapali coast or the Shan and Kachin highlands — must consult the FCDO travel advice for Myanmar at gov.uk before any trip and read it carefully, because the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office publishes specific guidance on travel that materially affects insurance cover, consular reach and route planning.
Public access is by appointment only and routine queries are routed through the FCDO online enquiry form. The 24-hour FCDO emergency number is the primary channel for British nationals needing urgent consular help. The embassy's consular reach outside Yangon is limited and the FCDO travel advice page contains the most current operational information.
Visa Services
Myanmar applicants for UK visas use the UKVI online application route on gov.uk for visit, study (including Chevening Myanmar and self-funded undergraduate, master's and PhD routes), Skilled Worker and family categories. Applications are submitted and paid for online; biometrics are taken at a VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre, with the centre assigned at booking — for Myanmar this is often a regional centre rather than an in-country one. Documents in Burmese script require certified English translation. The Embassy does not accept applications or issue decisions — that work sits with UKVI hubs.
Consular Services
The embassy serves British nationals in Myanmar, with priority on emergencies and people in vulnerable circumstances. Services include emergency travel documents for lost, stolen or expired passports; assistance after hospitalisation, arrest or detention; help following the death of a British national; notarial services within the FCDO published scope; and signposting to local English- and Burmese-speaking lawyers, doctors and translators. Routine passport renewals are handled through HM Passport Office online. British nationals should consult the FCDO travel advice for Myanmar at gov.uk before travel.
Service Area
The embassy covers the Republic of the Union of Myanmar from Yangon, including Mandalay and Upper Burma, the Shan and Kachin states, the Bago region, the Ayeyarwady delta, the Ngapali and Rakhine coast, Bagan and the Mon and Kayin states. The embassy's consular reach outside Yangon is limited and varies; the FCDO travel advice page on gov.uk contains the most current operational information.
Appointment Information
All in-person services are by appointment. Initial contact is via the FCDO online enquiry form linked from the embassy's gov.uk page; the 24-hour FCDO emergency number serves British nationals needing urgent consular help. Walk-in attendance is not offered.
