British Embassy Ashgabat

Embassy of UK in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Overview

The British Embassy in Ashgabat is the first point of contact for UK visa information in Turkmenistan. Turkmen nationals require a UK visa for visits, study, work, or family routes — applications are typically submitted through VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres in the region. The Embassy also provides emergency consular assistance and notarial services to British nationals. Important: Emergency Travel Documents cannot be used to enter or transit Turkmenistan. Visitors to Turkmenistan require a visa and an official letter of invitation or tour operator support. Ashgabat — one of the world's most unusual capitals with its all-white marble architecture — and the ancient Silk Road cities of Merv (UNESCO World Heritage) and Nisa attract specialist travellers. Access is tightly controlled and independent tourism is very limited.

Visa Services

Turkmen nationals require a UK visa for all visits, study, work, and family routes. Applications are submitted through regional VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres. Check https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa for the nearest centre and current requirements. Note: there is no VFS Global centre in Turkmenistan itself.

Consular Services

The Embassy provides emergency assistance for British nationals experiencing illness, injury, crime, or bereavement. Emergency travel documents are available for lost, stolen, damaged, or expired passports — note these cannot be used to enter or transit Turkmenistan. Notarial and documentary services are available. Trade & Export Support

UK-Turkmenistan trade is centred on the energy sector — Turkmenistan holds the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves. British companies with expertise in oil, gas, engineering, and professional services operate in or service the Turkmen energy market. UK exports include specialist equipment and professional services.

Investment Opportunities

Turkmenistan's primary investment opportunity is in the energy sector (natural gas, oil). The government selectively opens sectors to foreign investment. Market access is complex; thorough due diligence and specialist advice are essential before entering.

Business Support

The Embassy can provide introductions and market information for British businesses with serious interests in Turkmenistan's energy or professional services sectors. Given the complexity of the market, specialist legal and business advisors are strongly recommended.

Cultural & Educational Programs

Educational links between the UK and Turkmenistan are developing. Chevening scholarships are available for outstanding Turkmen graduates. British Council programmes support English-language teaching in the country.

Service Area

The British Embassy covers all of Turkmenistan from Ashgabat.

Special Notes

Exit visas are required to leave Turkmenistan and must be obtained from the State Migration Service — allow up to 5 working days for processing. Emergency Travel Documents cannot be used to enter or transit Turkmenistan. All foreign visitors require a visa and an official invitation or registered tour. Ashgabat holds a Guinness World Record for the highest density of white marble-clad buildings. The ancient city of Merv was once one of the largest cities in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
