United States Embassy in Reykjavik

Embassy of USA in Reykjavík, Iceland

Overview

The U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik is the United States diplomatic mission in Iceland. Iceland is a founding NATO ally and a key partner for the United States in Arctic security, North Atlantic defence, and climate research. The bilateral relationship extends to trade, renewable energy cooperation, scientific research, and a growing tourism connection — Icelandair's transatlantic hub at Keflavik makes Iceland a natural stopover between North America and Europe, and American tourists are among the largest visitor groups to Iceland. The embassy is located at Engjateigur 7 in Reykjavik.

Visa Services

Iceland participates in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), so Icelandic citizens can travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa using an approved ESTA. The embassy processes all other visa categories, including student (F-1), work, and immigrant visas for residents of Iceland.

Consular Services

The American Citizen Services (ACS) unit provides passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial services, and emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Iceland. Given the large number of American tourists visiting the country, the consular section handles a significant volume of emergency travel documents and assistance cases.

Trade & Export Support

The embassy supports bilateral trade between the United States and Iceland. Key sectors include renewable energy (geothermal technology transfer), fisheries, data centres (US tech firms use Iceland's renewable-energy-powered hosting), aluminium, and tourism. The embassy works with the American Chamber of Commerce in Iceland to facilitate business connections.

Cultural & Educational Programs

The Public Affairs section manages the Fulbright exchange programme for academic exchange between the US and Iceland, supports English-language initiatives, and organises cultural events connecting American and Icelandic communities. Arctic research cooperation between US and Icelandic universities is a significant academic tie.
