Overview
The US Consulate General in Hyderabad — housed in the historic Paigah Palace in Secunderabad — serves Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and is one of the highest-volume US visa-processing posts in the world. The two-state jurisdiction is the heart of India's information-technology and pharmaceutical industries, and the region sends one of the largest annual cohorts of H-1B specialty-occupation applicants and F-1 student-visa applicants of any consular district in India.
Visa Services
The consulate processes the same nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories as the embassy: B-1/B-2 visitor visas, F-1 and J-1 student/exchange visas, H-1B specialty-occupation, L-1 intra-company transfer, O-1, P, and the family- and employment-based immigrant categories. H-1B and F-1 dominate Hyderabad's volume — Telangana and Andhra Pradesh together account for a disproportionate share of Indian H-1B beneficiaries and US-bound graduate students, reflecting the region's deep ties with American technology employers and graduate-school pipelines.
All applications run through the official US visa application system with VFS Global as the in-country partner; the consulate does not accept walk-in applications. Wait times for interview slots are routinely among the longest in the world — check the current US Embassy and Consulates wait-time table before booking flights. The Interview Waiver programme is available for certain repeat applicants who meet published criteria.
Consular Services
The American Citizen Services unit provides passport applications, renewals and emergency travel documents; Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA) for children born to US-citizen parents; notarial acts; Social Security number applications; federal-benefits guidance; and emergency assistance for US citizens facing arrest, hospitalisation, the death of a relative, or natural disaster across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
ACS is reached at hydacs@state.gov; the consulate main line +91 40 4033 8300 is the after-hours emergency number. US citizens living in or travelling through the two states should enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). The OCI / dual-nationality note that applies at the embassy applies equally here: India does not recognise dual citizenship and may require an Indian passport or valid OCI card paired with the most recent foreign passport for entry and exit.
Trade & Export Support
The US Commercial Service operates a regional office at the consulate covering one of the world's most concentrated US-India business corridors. The two-state jurisdiction hosts large American technology campuses (Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Apple supplier operations, Google, Meta and many smaller firms) and the bulk of India's pharmaceutical manufacturing — Dr. Reddy's, Aurobindo Pharma, Hetero, Cipla and others supply a substantial share of the US generic-medicines market. Sector emphasis at the FCS office accordingly leans toward information technology and software services, life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, aerospace and defence, and education services.
The operational entry point for US exporters is the Commercial Service's India page on the Department of Commerce trade portal; the Hyderabad team handles Initial Market Check, Gold Key partner-search and trade-mission support for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Investment Opportunities
The consulate's economic and commercial team supports both directions of investment in the two states. For US investors entering or expanding in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, the team coordinates with the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and the AP Economic Development Board, and orients investors to the relevant Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes — particularly in electronics, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and bulk drugs, which are the regional sectoral priorities.
For Indian investors looking at the United States, SelectUSA support is provided through the consulate's commercial team, with referrals to specific US states' investment offices. Hyderabad's life-sciences and IT firms are an important source of inbound investment to US states.
Business Support
The most active business-membership organisations in the jurisdiction are AmCham India's Hyderabad chapter (sector committees, advocacy, networking events), the Telangana state chapter and the Andhra Pradesh state chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and sector-specific bodies such as NASSCOM (for IT) and the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (for pharma). At the bilateral level the US-India Business Council (USIBC) and US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) operate.
For American businesses with sector-specific questions, the FCS team in Hyderabad is the usual operational entry point; for membership networking, the Hyderabad AmCham chapter or the relevant CII / FICCI state chapter.
Cultural & Educational Programs
Hyderabad and the surrounding region are among the largest single sources of Indian students at US universities — graduate programmes in computer science, engineering, business analytics and data science draw very large cohorts annually. The operational programmes are:
• EducationUSA advising centres at the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) office in Hyderabad — university selection, application strategy, standardised tests, financial aid and visa interview preparation, free of charge.
• The Fulbright-Nehru programme administered by USIEF — graduate fellowships, research scholar grants in both directions, English Teaching Assistantships and the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship; calls are announced annually through USIEF.
• The Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) for Indian researchers and faculty — collaborative research, workshops and short-term fellowships in sciences and engineering.

The consulate covers Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
For the rest of India: Embassy New Delhi covers the northern states and Bhutan; Consulate General Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; Consulate General Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep; Consulate General Kolkata covers West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim and the eight northeastern states. Appointment Information
Visa appointments run through the official US visa application system (DS-160 form) and the VFS Global India scheduling system for biometric and interview slots; visa fees are paid online before the appointment is locked. Wait times vary widely by category and season — check the live US Embassy and Consulates wait-time table before booking flights.

Emergencies affecting US citizens reach the consulate on +91 40 4033 8300. Address: Paigah Palace, 1-8-323, Chiran Fort Lane, Begumpet, Secunderabad 500003.
Special Notes
The consulate occupies the historic Paigah Palace in Secunderabad — one of the heritage palaces of the Paigah nobility under the former Nizam state, repurposed as the US Consulate General. Access is by Hyderabad Metro (Paradise station on the Blue Line is closest), prepaid taxi or ride-hailing app. Access is strictly by appointment; visitors pass through extensive security screening on arrival and must present valid photo identification.
Mobile phones, electronic devices, large bags and food are not permitted inside the secure perimeter. Storage is limited; plan to leave devices with your driver. The consulate observes both US federal holidays and Indian public holidays — the consolidated calendar is published on the consulate's section of the embassy website.
