United States Embassy in Bucharest

Embassy of USA in Bucharest, Romania

Overview

Romania is a member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Romanian nationals with a valid ESTA can travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest handles other visa categories for residents of Romania: student (F-1), exchange (J-1), work (H, L, O), fiancé (K), and all immigrant visas including family reunification. The embassy is located at Bulevardul Dr. Liviu Librescu 4-6, Sector 1, Bucharest — a modern, purpose-built compound in the northern part of the city.

Visa Services

Romanian nationals with a valid ESTA do not need a visa for tourism or business travel to the United States (up to 90 days). The embassy processes non-VWP categories: F-1 student, J-1 exchange, H/L/O work visas, K fiancé, and all immigrant visa categories. Appointments must be booked online via the USTravelDocs portal at ustraveldocs.com. The large Romanian diaspora in the United States means immigrant and family reunification visas are among the most frequently requested.

Consular Services

The American Citizen Services (ACS) unit provides passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial services, and emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Romania. The unit serves American business professionals, students, dual nationals, and the broader expat community.

Trade & Export Support

The U.S. Commercial Service promotes American exports to Romania's growing market, with focus on sectors including information technology, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure. Romania's IT sector is one of Central and Eastern Europe's most developed, attracting strong U.S. tech industry interest.

Investment Opportunities

Romania offers investment opportunities in IT and software, manufacturing, energy (including renewables), agribusiness, and infrastructure. The embassy supports two-way investment via the SelectUSA programme, connecting Romanian companies with U.S. investment opportunities.

Business Support

The embassy's Economic Section supports U.S. companies operating in Romania, advising on investment climate, market access, regulatory conditions, and business partnerships. Romania's EU membership, educated workforce, and competitive costs make it a popular base for U.S. technology and services operations.

Cultural & Educational Programs

The Public Affairs section manages the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and supports a range of cultural and educational exchange programmes. Romania has a well-established academic community with long-standing ties to U.S. universities.

Appointment Information

All visa interviews and ACS services must be booked online via the USTravelDocs portal at ustraveldocs.com. Walk-in appointments are not available. The embassy is located at Bulevardul Dr. Liviu Librescu 4-6, Sector 1, Bucharest 015118. All visitors are subject to security screening; electronic devices are not permitted.

Special Notes

The embassy compound is in the northern part of Bucharest, not the historic city centre. U.S. citizens in Romania should enrol in the STEP programme. Review the current U.S. State Department travel advisory before travelling.
